Identifying Earwigs in Hawaii

Earwigs are reddish-brown to dark brown insects, roughly half an inch to three-quarters of an inch long, with six legs, antennae, and the distinctive pincers (cerci) at the tip of their abdomen. Those pincers earn them the nickname pincher bugs, though they rarely use them on people. They’re nocturnal, spending daylight hours hidden in moist, dark locations and becoming active after dark.

On Oahu, the seasonal dormancy that limits earwig populations elsewhere simply doesn’t apply. Moisture and organic debris are available year-round, which means populations stay active across all seasons rather than dying back in cooler months.

Where Earwigs Hide on Oahu Properties

Outdoors, earwigs shelter under mulch, leaf litter, ground cover, and damp soil, particularly in garden beds close to foundations. They’re also drawn to outdoor lighting and commonly gather on patios and lanais after dark.
